Escaping a junkie mom and abusive stepdad, Magdalene steals a drug lord’s money and holes up with some friends-of-a-friend in the middle of BF Utah.
That’s where things go from bad to weird.
The place is called The Society for Consciousness Research, Exploration and Mapping, though they just call it the Commune. It’s led by a genius mathematician who abandoned his academic career to study lucid dreaming and the afterlife. The people there believe some very interesting things. They also seem to be involved in shady investments and money laundering. But whatever her doubts, Magdalene has nowhere else to go.
Then she meets Omar, another Commune member. When he appears in her dreams—and describes them to her when she’s awake—she’s forced to consider that their beliefs might be real.
Omar teaches Magdalene to manipulate the dreamscape and navigate the surreal pathways of the Dead. But strange henchmen with glowing eyes lurk there, and they’re trying to lure Magdalene in. Then there’s the drug lord, who wants his money back and is searching for her.
Pursued by enemies in two dimensions, Magdalene has to figure out who she can trust and what’s real before she gets in over her head.

As Magdalene struggles to accept Omar’s betrayal and to understand a universe that rewards assholes like Stan and punishes people like Morris, the other shoe drops and Omar betrays her again. She can’t stay in the Commune any longer. But where can she go?
Enter Gavin Cavanaugh, the man behind the Tower. A reclusive genius who made his billions writing software for casino gaming machines, Cavanaugh now runs Answers Industries, a mysterious firm with roots in both the living world and the Land of the Dead.
Cavanaugh has been trying to recruit Magdalene for a long time, and he offers her everything she could possibly desire in exchange for signing on as one of his Deathwalkers. He even claims he has a way to balance the scales of cosmic justice and to ensure evil people like Stan are punished.
But the Dead are uneasy with Cavanaugh’s project, and Magdalene suspects he’s hiding things from her, including the real reason she’s there. As she delves deeper into the project and becomes closer with the man himself, she begins to doubt everything she’s ever known. There’s only one thing Magdalene knows for sure: Gavin Cavanaugh will do anything—anything—to keep her there.

Magdalene begins suffering terrifying visions as she’s pulled closer and closer to the brink of the void by forces she doesn’t understand. Again and again, Gavin Cavanaugh pulls her back. But why?
When she finally finds the answer to that question, she wishes she hadn’t. And then she gets a brutal lesson from the universe that shows her how deeply enmeshed in lies she’s been.
